"We
are responsible to live entirely in union with Jesus and in dependence on his
presence. Branches have life only to the extent to which they are attached to
the vine, and fruitfulness stems only from the life-giving sap provided by the
vine . . . The goal of every disciple is to remain in Jesus and thereby to
glorify God by bearing much fruit (15:8). This is first accomplished by total
dependence on the Lord and placing all needs at his feet in prayer . . . This
results in two things: first, God is glorified . . . Second, fruitfulness shows
“yourselves to be my disciples.”1
