Psalm 119:161–168 (NIV),
161 Rulers persecute me without cause, but my heart trembles at your word. 162 I rejoice in your promise like one who finds great spoil. 163 I hate and detest falsehood but I love your law. 164 Seven times a day I praise you for your righteous laws. 165 Great peace have those who love your law, and nothing can make them stumble. 166 I wait for your salvation, Lord, and I follow your commands. 167 I obey your statutes, for I love them greatly. 168 I obey your precepts and your statutes, for all my ways are known to you.
Father for those who love Your Law there is great joy, hope and great peace. The joy of the psalmist does not lie primarily in the immediate change of his circumstance, but simply in the heartfelt love for Your Word. Love is the turn gate that moves us from evil to good. Love stirs up peace and security in our hearts. Obedience is easy because of love -- love for Your Law -- Your Torah. What is it about rules, do's and don'ts, threats and promises that causes the worshiper to grasp them with deep affection? Where does this love come from? Is it not a supernatural work of Your grace? I find no natural instinct in me that would want to read an ancient, seemingly archaic document, that is thousands of years old -- if genuine at all? What would give me such great trust, great peace and great joy about reading and obeying such a Book?
Father, continue to stir my affection for Your Law. This is nothing but sovereign unmitigated grace to me and countless others like me. This is mercy supreme. That we would love Your holy and precious Word. Grant such love that obedience is natural. Grant such love that joy becomes infectious. Grant such love that evil becomes abhorrent. Grant such love that Christ is glorified. For His Sake.
