Today's Sufficient Grace

2 Kings 10:16 (ESV),

16 And he said, “Come with me, and see my zeal for the Lord.” So he had him ride in his chariot.

Jehu was the 11th king of Israel, anointed by Elisha, the prophet. "At Jehu’s command, Jezebel, the notorious wife of Ahab, was thrown out of the window of the palace to her death, as prophesied by Elijah (1 Kin. 21:23)." [1]  Jehu continued to destroy the house of Ahab. He completely destroyed Baal worship in Israel.

Speaking of Jehu's zeal, Matthew Henry writes, "This is commonly taken as not well said by Jehu, and as giving cause to suspect that his heart was not right with God in what he did, and that the zeal he pretended for the Lord was really zeal for himself and his own advancement." [2]

The danger that lurks behind all that we do can be summed up in the question, "Why do we do what we do?"   One greater than Jehu is among us.  It is Jesus who prayed, “I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do.” (John 17:4, ESV).

. . .  whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.” (1 Peter 4:11, ESV)
